Greece FAQs
How many islands should I visit?
It’s worthwhile to stop at least 2-3 islands on a trip to Greece, which gives you a great mix without rushing. For a trip to Paros, Milos, Santorini and Athens like we did, you’ll need at least 7-10 days.
Do I need to book ferries in advance?
In peak season (June – September), yes – book your ferries at least 1–2 weeks ahead, especially between popular islands like Paros, Milos, and Santorini. Shoulder season is more flexible, but it’s still worth reserving the main routes early.
What’s the best Greek island for first-time visitors?
Paros is amazing for first-time island travelers – it’s relaxed, easy to get around, and has great beaches, food, and the picture-perfect streets that come to mind when you think of a Greek island. Santorini is beautiful, and great for a first trip if you only have 1-2 nights.
How long should I spend in Athens?
1-2 nights is perfect, but if you have extra time, 3 nights will allow you to do a day trip outside of the city. Athens is very walkable, so you can easily see the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and top neighborhoods in a full day.
Do I need a car or ATV on the islands?
On Paros and Milos, yes – ATVs or rental cars make exploring beaches and villages much easier. In Santorini and Athens, taxis and walking are usually enough.
Can I swim in Greece outside the summer months?
Yes! Water warms up by late May and stays warm through October. September often has the warmest, calmest water of the year.
What’s the best way to get between islands?
Ferries are the easiest for the Cyclades. Blue Star and SeaJets are the two most common companies, and most routes take 1 – 4 hours. Flights are also an option between most larger islands for longer distances or if you get sea sick easily.
Are Greek islands expensive?
It varies. Paros and Milos are mid-range, Santorini is pricier, and Athens is very affordable. Food and activities are generally good value everywhere, especially compared to the states.
Do I need to tip in Greece?
Tipping isn’t mandatory but is appreciated. Round up the bill or leave 5-10% for good service. In taxis, rounding up a euro or two is common.
What should I pack for Greece?
Light dresses, swimsuits, sandals, a linen layer for breezy nights, and a small tote for beach days. If you’re renting an ATV, bring sunglasses and something to cover your face from dust.
