Mexico FAQs

Is Mexico safe for travelers?

Most popular destinations in Mexico are very used to tourism and generally safe as long as you stick to well-trafficked areas and use basic precautions. I always recommend using official taxis, avoiding driving at night, and staying aware of your surroundings just like you would in any major city. Cabo, Valle de Guadalupe, La Paz, and Zihuatanejo are all popular with visitors for a reason.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

Not at all — English is widely spoken in Cabo and in most hotels, restaurants, and wineries across Baja. In more local areas like La Paz or Zihuatanejo, basic Spanish phrases go a long way, but you won’t struggle.

How many days do you need for each destination?

Cabo works perfectly for a 3 – 4 day beach getaway. Valle de Guadalupe is ideal for a 2 – 3 day wine country trip, while La Paz is best with 3 – 5 days if you want to visit multiple beaches and book an Espiritu Santo or whale shark tour.

Do I need a rental car?

In Valle de Guadalupe and La Paz, yes – it makes everything easier. In Cabo, you can get by with taxis and walking if you’re staying near the marina or Medano Beach, but renting a car gives you more flexibility for beaches and day trips. Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo is walkable with easy taxis between the towns.

Is Mexico expensive?

It depends on the destination. Cabo can be pricier due to resorts and tourists, while La Paz and Zihuatanejo tend to be more affordable. Valle de Guadalupe has wine-country pricing (similar to California), but you can still find great meals and tastings at reasonable prices.

Can you drink the water in Mexico?

It’s best to stick to bottled or filtered water. Most hotels and Airbnbs provide filtered drinking water, and restaurants use purified ice.

What should I pack for a Mexico trip?

Light clothes, a swimsuit, sunscreen, comfortable sandals, and a light layer for breezy nights. If you’re heading to La Paz or Cabo, pack water shoes or snorkel gear if you have it. For Valle de Guadalupe, bring a cute outfit for wine tasting and a light jacket for evenings.

How far are these destinations from each other?

Cabo ↔ La Paz is about a 2-hour drive.
Cabo ↔ Valle de Guadalupe is a separate region of Baja (requires a flight).
Zihuatanejo ↔ ANY Baja destination requires a short domestic flight.
