La Paz has a laid-back charm that makes it the perfect Baja escape, and if you’re looking for a boutique hotel that blends modern luxury with authentic Mexican design, the newly opened Republica Pagana is it.
With a prime location just steps from the Malecon, the hotel offers some of most stylish accommodations I’ve ever seen, a stunning rooftop bar with some of the best sunset views in town, and an overall intimate, upscale experience.
Republica Pagana incorporates this edgy, authentic Mexican craftsmanship with a modern minimalism twist across the entire property. Its stylish, open-air design creates a warm, tranquil retreat, making it the perfect place to relax. The property just exudes vibes from ever corner!

Location
Republica Pagana is set in the heart of La Paz, which makes it the perfect location to explore the city. You’ll be just a five-minute walk from the Malecon, where you can enjoy oceanfront walks, explore the local art, and check out some of the best seafood restaurants in town.
How To Get There
Republica Pagana is located only 15 minutes away from the La Paz airport, or about 2.5 hours away from the Cabo Airport.
Coming from LA, you can find a direct flight to La Paz, but there is only one scheduled each day through Alaska Airlines. But if those times or prices don’t work for you, don’t worry – there’s several other ways to get into La Paz.
We actually chose to drive to the CBX entrance of the Tijuana airport for a direct flight into La Paz. Flights tend to be cheaper out of Tijuana, but you do have to make the 2.5 hour drive from LA to San Diego.
Or, there’s also the option of flying directly into Cabo, and renting a car or booking a shuttle service to La Paz. It’s a beautiful scenic drive from Cabo, too! Or even better, it’s the perfect add-on vacation spot to your next Cabo trip!
Republica Pagana Review
Ambiance & Vibe
The first thing you’ll notice when walking into Republica Pagana is that the design is absolutely breathtaking. If I could draw up a vibey, architectural dream house, this would be exactly it. The space is minimalist yet warm, with earthy tones, natural materials, and handcrafted decor that reflect Baja’s effortless style.
Because the hotel itself is small and intimate, with only 12 rooms, it really feels like a private oasis rather than a bustling resort (this is why I LOVE boutique hotels). And, it’s also adults-only, so no children running around, which for us, was a plus (sorry families!). The hotel definitely caters those looking for a chic & romantic getaway.

Restaurants & Bars
One of the standout features of Republica Pagana that will have me coming back each trip to La Paz is its exceptional dining scene. The property has two on-site restaurants that are both unique experiences in their own: the lively rooftop bar Azotea and the refined Comedor restaurant.
Azotea
Azotea is Republica Pagana’s rooftop bar and restaurant, and offers the most insane views of the ocean coupled with the architectural genius of the open-air rooftop. I truly have never seen anything quite like this in my life – it’s breathtaking from every angle.
The menu is small but well-curated, offering a selection of fresh, Baja-inspired dishes that highlight local ingredients. You can grab breakfast here in the mornings, with delicious coffee and light bites to start the day. But where the restaurant really shines is their cocktail program & light bites. The handcrafted drinks they offer pair perfectly with the unbeatable rooftop views.
And speaking of views—this is one of the best spots in La Paz to watch the sunset. Whether you’re grabbing a drink before dinner or settling in for a relaxing evening, the rooftop experience is must & makes this hotel worth a visit.

Comedor
For a more refined dining experience, Comedor is Republica Pagana’s signature restaurant, serving elevated Mexican cuisine with a contemporary twist. The menu highlights fresh seafood, locally sourced produce, and inventive takes on traditional dishes, all presented with impeccable attention to detail.
The intimate setting and thoughtful plating make it perfect for a romantic dinner or a special night out. And, on par with the rooftop restaurant, the architecture makes for such a unique & dramatic backdrop to a special meal. If you’re a foodie, Comedor is reason enough to book a stay at this hotel.

Room
The rooms at Republica Pagana strike the perfect balance between modern simplicity and high-end comfort. Because there are only 12 rooms in the hotel, it almost feels like you have the space to yourself.
We stayed in the Oceanview Suite, with included a huge corner room, with a wraparound balcony. The sliding glass doors to outside were the prefect touch to give a feeling of indoor/outdoor living.
And, the rooms are designed impeccably, on par with the style of the rest of the hotel. The design is sleek, with neutral tones and handcrafted touches that give the space a stylish, curated feel.
Each room comes with air conditioning, a smart TV with streaming services, and high-speed Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected while still feeling like you’ve escaped.
The bathroom was huge, and featured rainfall showers packed with luxe amenities. We could even see the ocean from our shower.
And, I can’t forget to mention the in-room “Call for Champagne” button – just press the button, and staff will send a bottle of Champagne right to your room!!

Amenities
While Republica Pagana isn’t a large, amenity-packed resort, it offers just the right amount of touches of luxury for the perfect stay.
The rooftop has 6x individual dip pools that you can book from your room for a few hours. They make for the perfect retreat on hot day, when you want to cool off from the afternoon heat. And the views of the ocean up here are amazing! Each pool has access to the restaurant menu, and there’s even a push for champagne button 🙂
Their concierge team is always available to help plan excursions, book tours, and recommend hidden gems around the city. They’ll reach out via whatsapp prior to your stay with all the services they can help with!
Staff
The staff at Republica Pagana was very sweet & helpful throughout our stay. We absolutely loved the hotel manger who runs the rooftop restaurant – he had the best recommendations for things to do around the city.
The only downfall was that when it was sunset hour and the restaurant was very busy, we ran into trouble reaching the front desk. We had ordered ice for pre-dinner drinks on the balcony, which ended up taking nearly an hour, plus two phone calls – pretty unacceptable for a hotel at this standard.
I hope they learn to juggle the busy hours of the rooftop with the prioritization of guests staying at the hotel. But again, just a slight inconvience, while the rest of the experience was lovely.
Pricing
Republica Pagana falls into the mid-to-high-end boutique hotel category, offering luxury and design without the over-the-top resort pricing. Rates typically range from $200 to $350 per night, depending on the season, room type, and availability.
Peak season (December–April) tends to be on the higher end, while off-season months (summer and early fall) offer better deals.
While it’s not a budget stay, the level of design, service, and exclusivity make it well worth the price. Plus, compared to similar boutique hotels in Cabo or Tulum, you’re getting a much better value for the quality of the experience!
What’s Nearby?
Staying at Republica Pagana puts you right in the middle of the best that La Paz has to offer. The Malecon is just steps away, making it easy to take a morning walk along the waterfront, check out the many beaches nearby, or grab a meal at one of the many oceanfront restaurants.
Beaches
- Balandra Beach (30-min drive) – One of Mexico’s most famous beaches, Balandra is known for its shallow, turquoise waters, soft white sand, and iconic mushroom-shaped rock formation. It’s a must-visit, but arrive early since the number of visitors is limited each day.
- Playa Tecolote (30-min drive) – Just past Balandra, Playa Tecolote is a more expansive beach with beachfront restaurants, lounge chairs, and water activities. If you’re up for an adventure, boat tours to Isla Espíritu Santo leave from here.
- Playa El Coromuel (10-min drive) – The closest beach to the hotel, El Coromuel has a pier, palapas, and calm waters perfect for swimming. It’s a great option for a quick beach escape without leaving the city.
- Playa Pichilingue (20-min drive) – A local favorite, Pichilingue has crystal-clear waters, beachside restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great spot to enjoy fresh seafood with your toes in the sand.

Restaurants
I could go on and on about the food scene in La Paz!!! At Repubulica Pagana, you’ll be walking distance to many of the city’s best dining options.
- Sunrise/Sunset (2-min walk) – A casual cafe serving coffee, juices, and smoothies for breakfast. Turns into a cute organic wine bar in the evenings!
- NIM (5-min walk) – One of the top-rated restaurants in La Paz, NIM serves creative Mexican-fusion dishes in a stylish yet relaxed setting. The seafood & cocktails are exceptional.
- TacoFish (8-min walk) – No trip to La Paz is complete without Baja-style fish tacos, and TacoFish is one of the best spots for crispy & fresh tacos. Make sure to try both the fish & shrimp tacos!
- Mariscos Bismarkcito (10-min walk) – A classic La Paz seafood joint with ocean views. Order the ceviche, grilled fish, or chocolate clams for a true taste of Baja.
- Bizanga (10-min walk) – A laid-back, open-air restaurant with a bohemian vibe, Bizanga is the perfect places to grab mouth-watering bites like ceviche & pork belly, paired with their craft cocktails. Great for a relaxed dinner with live music.
- Mezcalería La Miserable (10-min walk) – A must-visit for mezcal lovers, this cozy, candlelit bar specializes in artisanal mezcal from all over Mexico. The knowledgeable bartenders can guide you through a tasting, making it a perfect spot for a low-key night out. Sit outside in their patio, and you’ll get to make friends with the sweet cat 🙂

Final Thoughts – Is Republica Pagana Worth It?
ABSOLUTLEY. If you’re looking for the best boutique hotel in La Paz, Republica Pagana delivers. The stylish design, intimate setting, and unbeatable location make it one of the best places to stay in the city. The rooftop bar alone makes it worth the visit!
That being said, it’s not for everyone. If you’re looking for a huge, resort-style hotel with endless amenities, you might be better off elsewhere. But if you’re after a beautifully designed, centrally located, and thoughtfully curated stay, this is the perfect choice.
Would I stay here again? In a heartbeat.
