There’s something timeless about Greece – a mix of ancient history, sparkling seas, and whitewashed villages that make it one of the most unforgettable destinations in the world. Whether you’re wandering through ruins in Athens, hopping between sun-drenched islands, or sipping wine by the Aegean, Greece blends culture and relaxation like nowhere else.
From the cliffside sunsets of Santorini, to the beach-filled landscapes of Milos, and the bougainvillea-lined streets of Paros, every island has its own rhythm. The food is incredible (hello, grilled octopus and fresh feta), the people are warm, and the scenery feels like a dream.
After visiting several of the Cyclades and the capital city, I’ve pulled together the best Greece travel guide, filled with everything you need to plan your perfect Greek adventure – from where to go and how long to stay, to my favorite hotels, itineraries, and insider tips.

Table of Contents
What to Know Before You Go
- Where Is It?
- Greece sits in southeastern Europe, surrounded by the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas.
- Best For?
- Couples, island hoppers, foodies, and history lovers.
- Best Time To Visit?
- If you plan to hit the islands, late April – early October is your best bet. June and September are ideal – warm, lively, but not overly crowded. And the peak summer months will be hot and quite crowded, but can be worth it if you’re looking for hot beach days.
- Currency & Language
- The official currency is the Euro, and Greek is the official language. English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas, so communication shouldn’t be a problem.
- How To Get Around?
- Ferries connect most islands, while short domestic flights are great for longer routes (like Santorini to Athens).
- How Long To Stay?
- At least 7-10 days if you want to combine Athens and two islands. If you want to just hit Athens and one island, aim for 4-5 days. Or for the best of Greece, follow my 12-Day Greek Island Hopping Itinerary.
- What to Pack for Greece?
- Lightweight clothes + swimsuits
- Comfortable sandals or sneakers (lots of walking!)
- Hat + sunscreen – the Greek sun is strong
- A light sweater for breezy ferry rides
- Portable charger and small backpack for day trips

How to Get Around Greece
Getting between islands is easier than it looks. The main ferry routes connect Athens (via Piraeus Port) with most of the Cyclades – including Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Milos, etc. Ferry rides range from 3-5 hours depending on the route, and I always recommend booking through FerryHopper for the easiest schedule view and online tickets. It definitely requires some skill to navigate the different routes between islands, but FerryHopper will pull all that info for you – it really makes things SO much easier.
If you’re short on time, domestic flights link Athens to Santorini, Paros, and Milos in under an hour. Since I do get a bit seasick, we opted to fly between Athens and Paros, saving a good chunk of time (and some nausea, too, lol).
Once you make it to the islands, renting a small car or ATV gives you the most freedom to explore beaches and local villages at your own pace.
Pro tip: Book early ferries to avoid wind delays, and bring a jacket – it can get chilly on deck, even in summer.
