If you’re planning a trip to Banff or Lake Louise and want one standout splurge experience, let me save you some time: Basin Glacial Waters is absolutely worth looking into.
Located inside Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, this new wellness experience that opened up in Sept of 2025 feels like one of the most elevated things you can do in the area. It’s relaxing, beautifully designed, and honestly, one of the perfect ways to balance a trip filled with outdoor activities and cold weather.
After a few packed days in Banff, this ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip – there’s no better way to end a trip than with a spa visit, and this one is SO worth it!
If you’re wondering whether it’s worth the price, what the vibe is like, or if you should make time for it, here’s my honest Basin Glacial Waters review.

What Is Basin Glacial Waters?
This isn’t your typical spa where you show up for a treatment and leave. Basin is built around a self-guided wellness circuit, meaning you move through different hot and cold experiences at your own pace. Think warm pools, steam rooms, saunas, cold plunges, heated seating areas, and quiet relaxation spaces.
You can spend time wherever you’re enjoying most, whether that’s rotating between pools, sitting in the steam room, or simply relaxing with a view. It feels upscale and not at all stuffy – very polished and still maintains that cozy mountain feel.

Cost, Access, and What’s Included
One of the biggest things to know before planning this is that Basin Glacial Waters is currently only available to guests staying at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
At the time of our visit, access was priced separately from the room stay, and cost $275 CAD per person. Definitely a splurge, especially given that you do not get any treatments.
Your admission includes access to the full hydrotherapy circuit and wellness amenities, including:
- Indoor and outdoor thermal pools
- Hot and cold contrast experiences
- Sauna and steam rooms
- Relaxation lounges
- Locker rooms and changing facilities
- Scheduled guided sauna rituals at select times
For us, it felt worth budgeting for because it was more of a full experience than just using a hotel hot tub or pool. Especially when the hot tub views are a good as this!

How the Wellness Circuits Work
One of the more unique parts of Basin Glacial Waters is that they’ve created curated wellness trails for guests to follow instead of leaving you to guess where to start.
When you arrive, you’re given cards that outline different circuits, each with suggested steps and sequences. These guide you through experiences like hot pools, cold plunges, steam rooms, saunas, rest periods, and relaxation spaces in a specific order.
It’s a really smart touch because it gives structure if you’re not sure where to start, but still feels flexible.
We ended up mixing two different circuits together based on what sounded best to us, which I’d recommend. You can absolutely personalize the experience depending on whether you want deep relaxation, recovery, or more contrast therapy.
It makes the whole spa feel more intentional than just wandering from pool to pool.

Time Slots, Reservations, and Planning Ahead
Another important thing to know is that Basin runs on timed reservation windows.
Your booking gives you a 3-hour access window, and reservations are currently required. At the moment, spots are booked online through their reservation platform rather than walk-up access.
Because entry is tied to your time slot, it’s worth arriving on time. If you show up late, you can still enter, but your session still ends at the original scheduled end time. So if you booked 2 PM to 5 PM and arrive at 2:30 PM, you’d still need to leave at 5 PM.
This structure actually helps the space feel controlled and never overcrowded, which is a nice touch.

First Impressions
The space is absolutely gorgeous. Everything feels calm, modern, and really intentionally designed. Natural stone, warm lighting, clean lines, and that luxury hotel energy without being too much.
It doesn’t feel flashy or trendy for the sake of it. It feels timeless and very well thought out. It also felt SO peaceful. Even with other people there, it never felt loud or chaotic, which you can sometimes find at resort spas.
After a busy Banff itinerary, this was exactly the reset we wanted and needed, after days of trekking through the snow.

The Outdoor Pools Are the Main Event
If I’m being honest, the outdoor pools alone are really what makes Basin Glacial Waters worth it.
Sitting in warm water while surrounded by snowy mountain views is one of those travel moments that sounds hyped up online… and then somehow still exceeds expectations.
The cold air, the steam rising off the water, the mountains in the background — it’s just a really cool experience. There’s something about being outside in freezing temperatures while fully comfortable in warm water that makes the whole experience feel extra memorable.
If you’re visiting in winter, it’s elite.

Don’t Skip the Aufguss Sauna Ritual
One of the best surprises was the guided sauna ritual they run throughout the day, commonly called an Aufguss.
This is a hosted sauna session where an attendant uses essential oils, water on the stones, and towel movements to circulate waves of intense heat throughout the room. You’ll even get sauna hats to use while you’re in there, helping to protect your hair from the excess heat.
It turns a normal sauna visit into more of an experience. It felt immersive and unique — definitely worth trying it out if you’ve never done one before.
That said — fair warning — it gets HOT. I got pretty overheated afterward, so if you’re sensitive to heat, sit closer to the door, step out early if needed, and make sure to hydrate before and after.
We almost skipped it and I’m glad we didn’t. Definitely check the schedule when you arrive so you can plan around it.

Is Basin Glacial Waters Worth It?
For me, yes — easily.
Trips like Banff can be activity heavy. You’re walking a lot, outside a lot, waking up early, doing excursions, and constantly on the move.
Having a few hours here to slow down and recharge felt so worth it. It also felt more memorable than just doing another nice dinner or casual afternoon activity.
If you want one luxury moment built into the trip, I’d make it this.

Who I’d Recommend It For
This is especially worth it for:
- Couples wanting something romantic
- Anyone celebrating a birthday, honeymoon, or special trip
- Girls trips looking for one elevated group activity
- Spa people who appreciate a well-designed wellness space
- Anyone sore after skiing, skating, hiking, or dog sledding
My Honest Final Take
Some spa experiences are nice for an hour and then you forget about them. This wasn’t definitely not that!
Basin Glacial Waters felt like an actual highlight of the trip and one of the best luxury experiences in the Banff / Lake Louise area. It wasn’t just something to fill time — it became one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
If you’re already making the trip out there, I’d seriously consider building this into your itinerary. But, it’s definitely costly, especially given that you’re not getting a treatment. If you have the budget to make this happen, I’d definitely add it into any trip to Banff!
Especially in winter, there’s really not a better place to be then sitting in the outdoor hot tubs, looking out to the beautiful Lake Louise.
