If there’s one hotel in Banff that screams iconic, it’s Fairmont Banff Springs. Often called the “Castle in the Rockies,” this historic property sits above the town of Banff surrounded by mountain peaks, forest, and the Bow River below.
Staying here feels like part luxury resort, part national park experience. You get the grandeur of a world-famous hotel, but you’re also minutes from downtown Banff, scenic drives, ski areas, hiking trails, and some of the best views in Alberta.
If you’re debating whether the hype is real, this full Fairmont Banff Springs review breaks down what it’s actually like to stay here, who it’s best for, and whether it’s worth the splurge.

Location
The Fairmont Banff Springs sits just outside downtown Banff in one of the most scenic settings in town. The hotel overlooks the Bow River and surrounding mountains, giving it a peaceful feel while still being only a few minutes from restaurants, shops, and the main downtown area.
It feels tucked away enough to be special, but not remote at all.
How To Get There
If you’re flying in, you’ll most likely arrive by flying into the Calgary International Airport. From there, it’s about an 1.5 hour drive to Banff.
We had a rental car, which I’d recommend if you want to explore the area easily. It made getting into town, heading to the gondola, Johnston Canyon, and scenic drives incredibly easy.
You can walk into Downtown Banff from the hotel (around 25 minutes depending on weather), but in February it was way too cold for us, so driving made more sense.

Fairmont Banff Springs Review
Ambiance & Vibe
The Fairmont Banff Springs is one of those places that truly lives up to the hype. Pulling up for the first time while snow was falling felt so unreal. It literally looks like a castle rising out of the mountains. Between the stone exterior, snowy setting, and grand entrance, it immediately feels so magical.
Inside, the hotel has that historic luxury feeling. It’s elegant, cozy, and dramatic in that old-timey historic way. I genuinely felt like I was staying in a real-life castle. It’s just so grand! You’ll find little touches that add to the history of the space all throughout the property, like huge candelabras, gold mail drops, stone corridors, and elegant ball rooms.
And, even though the hotel is huge, it never felt overcrowded. There are so many lounges, corridors, bars, restaurants, and gathering spaces that people naturally spread out, so you have plenty of space.

The Rooms
We originally booked a Standard King Room and were upgraded to a Signature View King — which ended up being one of the highlights of the stay.
Our room overlooked the mountains and river, and the view alone made it worth it. Waking up to that scenery in winter was so incredible.
The room felt very updated and modern, with mountainy touches, which was a nice contrast to the historic exterior of the hotel. It was also surprisingly spacious with a huge bathroom, extremely comfortable bed, and great in-room touches like Le Labo bath products, robes, and slippers.
Everything felt elevated, comfortable, and worth the splurge.

Amenities
One of the reasons Fairmont Banff Springs feels so worth the splurge is that it offers far more than just a beautiful room. This is a true resort-style stay, with enough amenities and activities that you could easily fill a full day without ever leaving the property.
Whether you want to relax, stay active, or explore the history of the hotel itself, there’s a lot built into the experience.
HEATED OUTDOOR POOL
This was the standout amenity for us. You can head down from your room in your bathing suit, robe, and slippers, walk through the indoor pool area, and step directly into the heated outdoor pool through doors — meaning no freezing walk outside.
Swimming in a warm pool while surrounded by snow and mountain air was one of the coolest hotel experiences I’ve had. Just make sure to bring down a beanie or earmuffs – the cold is no joke.
INDOOR POOL & HOT TUB
There’s also an indoor pool, hot tubs, changing facilities, and lounge areas that make the entire pool space feel polished and easy to enjoy year-round.
FULL SPA
The hotel also has a full spa offering massages, treatments, and wellness experiences. If you’re planning a romantic or relaxing trip, this would be a great place to build in a spa afternoon.
FITNESS CENTER
There’s a full gym onsite for anyone wanting to keep up their workout routine while traveling. The hotel also offers fitness classes, which is a nice bonus if you prefer guided movement instead of a standard gym session.
ADVENTURE CENTER
This is one of the most underrated amenities, especially in winter. The staff were incredibly helpful and it made getting equipped for outdoor activities really easy. With the resort fee, you can free access to rent out ice cleats, sleds, snowshoes, fat tire bikes, etc. for no charged.
We rented ice cleats for our trek out to Johnston Canyon and it was so nice to have the access to these without having to rent for a fee offsite.
BOWLING ALLEY
Yes, there’s a bowling alley onsite (well, across the street, but still in the Fairmont property!), which adds such a fun unexpected element to the stay. It’s great for families, groups, snowy evenings, or just doing something different after dinner.
WALKING TOURS
The hotel offers several different walking tours, which are a great way to experience the grounds and surrounding scenery with more context.
HOTEL HISTORY TOURS
Because this property has such a rich history, the hotel also offers history tours. This is a really cool option if you want to learn more about how the castle came to be and the legacy behind one of Canada’s most iconic hotels.
AND SO MUCH MORE…
There’s seriously so much to explore. The amenities here feel like a major part of the value.
Between the pool, spa, fitness offerings, rentals, tours, bowling alley, and all the castle-like spaces to explore, this is the type of hotel where staying in can be just as fun as going out. That’s what separates it from a standard luxury stay.

Restaurants & Bars
One of the best parts of staying at Fairmont Banff Springs is that it feels like a full destination resort. There are so many restaurants, lounges, and bars onsite, so dining here can become part of the experience.
Whether you want cocktails, a romantic dinner, a cozy room service night, or a classic hotel afternoon tea, there are a lot of ways to do it. It’s nearly impossible to hit them all, so I’ve recapped the vibe of each space for you to best choose where to go!
- RUNDLE BAR: Best for cocktails, lunch, and stylish lounge energy. We loved the crispy chicken bowl and chili pork dumplings.
- VERMILLION ROOM (Breakfast): Great buffet with waffles, eggs, pastries, fruit, and tons more to choose from. This is the main breakfast area, outside of to-go snacks at Stock.
- VERMILLION ROOM (Dinner): Elevated comfort food in a warm upscale setting. Great easy dinner option onsite.
- AFTERNOON TEA: Classic grand hotel experience with pastries, tea service, and mountain views. Worth the splurge.
- 1888 CHOP HOUSE: Best for steakhouse energy and a higher-end celebratory dinner.
- WALDHAUS RESTAURANT: Cozy forest cabin vibe. Best for fondue, romance, and a memorable winter dinner.
- GRAPES WINE BAR: Great for pizza and wine in a more intimate setting.
- CASTELLO ITALIAN RESTAURANT: Comforting pasta and hearty Italian dishes after a cold day outside.
- ROOM SERVICE: Surprisingly excellent. The burger was incredible and perfect for cozy winter nights in robes.

Staff & Service
Service was excellent throughout the stay. Everyone at the Fairmont Banff Springs was warm, polished, and genuinely helpful. Room service arrived quickly, any requests we had were handled fast, and the staff in the adventure area were especially great.
The check-in process was super smooth, friendly, and welcoming straight from the start.

Pricing
This is definitely a splurge hotel, but one I personally thought was worth it.
We paid around $650 per night, but booked through our AMEX card to get additional savings, with a $300 hotel credit, free breakfast, and a $100 food credit. It definitely made the stay much easier to justify.
Also note that parking was an additional cost per night. When we stayed were $39/night for Self Parking and $59/night for Valet. We self-parked one night, then used free street parking for a few hours on our final day.
Honestly, we loved the hotel so much that even paying full price, I’d absolutely come back.
What’s Nearby?
The Fairmont Banff Springs is in a prime location because you feel tucked away in nature, but you’re still close to so many of Banff’s best experiences.
- DOWNTOWN BANFF: Only a few minutes by car, downtown Banff is full of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping, and that classic mountain town feel. It’s easy to pop into for dinner, drinks, or walking around.
- BANFF GONDOLA: This is one of the top things to do nearby and only a short drive from the hotel. It’s especially worth doing around sunset. The views over Banff and the surrounding Rockies are unreal.
- JOHNSTON CANYON: In winter, Johnston Canyon’s frozen waterfalls and canyon walkways make it feel straight out of a movie. If visiting in colder months, bring traction cleats or rent some like we did at the hotel. It was one of our favorite things we did!
- BOW VALLEY PARKWAY: This is one of the most scenic drives in the area and perfect for slower sightseeing. We explored sections of it during our stay and loved pulling off at viewpoints. Great chance to spot wildlife too.
- BOW RIVER TRAIL: Right outside the hotel, this is an easy scenic walk if you don’t want to drive anywhere. Beautiful river views, mountain scenery, and a peaceful way to start or end the day.
- SURPRISE CORNER VIEWPOINT: This is one of the most iconic views of the hotel itself. If you’re staying at Banff Springs, definitely go here for photos. Seeing the castle perched above the river is stunning.
- LAKE LOUISE: You’re about an hour away from Lake Louise here, but it’s a very common day trip from Banff. You can go ice skating on the frozen Lake Louise, dogsledding, skiing, and so much more. We actually changed hotels for our Lake Louise portion, but many people stay here and drive there for the day.

Tips Before You Book
- If possible, book a view room or hope for an upgrade — it makes a huge difference.
- Check credit card luxury hotel programs for perks. Ours added a lot of value.
- Bring a swimsuit for the pool, even in winter. Trust me.
- Give yourself time to explore the property. Half the fun is wandering through the castle-like hallways and hidden corners.
- Dining onsite is expensive, but worth mixing in for the experience.
Is The Fairmont Banff Springs Worth It?
Without hesitation — yes.
The Fairmont Banff Springs was one of those hotels that feels like a destination itself. Between the heated outdoor pool, castle setting, incredible views, and fun of exploring the property, it was truly so memorable from start to finish.
For a romantic getaway, luxury winter trip, or special Banff vacation, I think Fairmont Banff Springs is absolutely worth experiencing.
Would I stay again? A million times yes.
